TONGAN HEALTH SOCIETY INC BOARD FACILITATES MEDICAL AID TO TONGA

Tongan Health Society assists with impacts of Cyclone Gita in Tongatapu and Eua

The Tongan Health Society (THS) Board has sent medical aid to Tonga to assist with supplies to the hospitals and community in Tongatapu and Eua.

Dr Glenn Doherty-CEO and Medical Director says the THS Board working with Medical Aid Abroad had sent two containers to Tonga.  Board Chairperson Dr Maika Kinahoi Veikune said that the Board wanted to extend its Tongan Outreach Project scope to assist particularly the hospital in Eua one of the outer island hospitals in the Tongan Group.

The Board of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) has
approved the conferral of the honour of the Community Service Medal to Dr Glenn Doherty
(CEO and Medical Director) and Dr Glennis Mafi (Tasilisili Manager). Few doctors in New
Zealand are offered these awards.

SOCIETY TEAMS UP WITH MANA KIDZ

The Tongan Health Society has received a new contract from the National Hauora Coalition for the provision of five new school based clinics in South Auckland and is now partnering with Mana Kidz, which is a free, nurse-led, school based programme that provides comprehensive healthcare for children in the Counties Manukau Health region. The programme is led by the National Hauora Coalition and contracts with local providers.

TONGAN HEALTH SOCIETY BOARD ESTABLISHES NEW MEDICAL CENTRE IN WEST AUCKLAND

Tongan Health Society (THS) Board will open a new Medical Centre in Kelston Mall – West Auckland in April.


Dr Glenn Doherty-CEO and Medical Director says the THS Board signed a lease with the owner of Kelston Mall, Phillip Crawshaw of Crawshaw Property Limited on the 22/12/16. Dr Doherty says the due diligence was completed over the months before Christmas as part of the Society strategic direction and high level growth strategies. Ernst and Young Partner Stephen Mckernan under took a peer review of the due diligence for the Society Board.

A UNIQUE TONGAN MENTAL HEALTH SERVICE

Rising demands on the Tongan Health Society’s mental health service have resulted in an innovative way to meet those demands within budget. 

For more than a decade the service consisted of a mental health nurse who primarily focused on patients to ensure they were taking their medications as prescribed, medication side effects monitoring, as well as dealing with non-clinical issues such as housing and benefits. But CEO and Medical Director Dr Glenn Doherty saw the need to provide a wider range of mental health services.

Tongan Health Society rewarded for growing service to the community

Tongan youth at Onehunga High School, Kelston Boys High School and Toko Collaboration with pharyngeal Group A Streptococcus will benefit from a smartphone application (app) called a Memory Angel. It will remind them to take their penicillin medication on time over the 10-day course. The initiative, between the Tongan Health Society and Healthstat NZ, which developed the app, will remind patients through their smartphones as part of the Ministry of Health National Rheumatic Fever Campaign funded by the PES Innovations Project which the Tongan Health Society will run.
