About

Our mission is to provide the highest quality holistic healthcare services to the communities we serve, particularly for people of Tongan descent.

We have also achieved Cornerstone accreditation from the Royal College of General Practitioners for GPs in New Zealand. This accreditation confirms that our clinic’s performance and environment meet the standards set by the GP College.

Another significant achievement is the completion of Child Youth and Family (CYFS) accreditation and the realignment of our services to fit the new Integrated Outcome model of care.

Tongan Health is a top-performing primary care centre that takes a holistic view of our patients’ lives. Based on Whānau Ora principles, it provides integrated packages of care services for high-needs families and individuals.

Tongan Health is led by our CEO and Medical Director, Dr Glenn Doherty, who leads our team with dedication and professionalism. His leadership has helped us grow into a strong, resilient organisation that can better support the families who rely on our services.

Recently, we have won two health awards—one for being the top provider in the Alliance Health Plus network and another for our efforts in preventing rheumatic fever. These awards demonstrate that we’re raising the standard of healthcare for Pacific communities.

What we do

VISION
The Tongan Health Society and Langimālie Integrated Family Health Centres help people by providing holistic healthcare and social services to the highest standards.

Our organisation

Why we do it

MISSION
We aim to improve the health and well-being of all people in the communities we serve, particularly Tongan people living in Aotearoa.

Langimālie

The name Langimālie reflects our focus on health and wellbeing and gives meaning to our work. In Tongan culture, Langimālie signifies an important type of relationship. It is connected to the concept of 'mahu’ingamalie', which revolves around understanding how individuals relate to one another, their environment, and the significance behind those connections.

These relationships hold great significance for Tongan people and are regarded as essential for living well, peacefully, and in harmony with others in Aotearoa.

Langimālie also serves as a metaphor for a clear, bright sky. When Tongan values and responsibilities are honoured, a person’s face—or a group of people’s faces—can shine like a clear sky. Fulfilling these responsibilities brings peace, joy, and a profound sense of happiness in relationships with others.

In a leadership or management context, Langimālie supports Tongan people in leading healthier lives by preventing pain, suffering, and premature death.

Tongan community members, adults and children, sit together indoors on traditional woven mats during a gathering, illustrating the community served by the Tongan Health Society and Langimālie centres.

Our values

CULTURE, PEOPLE AND COMMUNITY

These are the three elements that unite us. Culture reflects our beliefs and what is important to us. People are the reason for our existence—we’re here to care for and support them. Community provides the context and purpose for the work we undertake.

COLLABORATION, COOPERATION AND RESPECT

We perform our best work when we work together. Each of us plays a role in supporting one another and fulfilling our mission. Everybody brings their valuable skills, and by recognising these, we can achieve the best health and social outcomes.

PROFESSIONALISM AND EXCELLENCE

We are honest and transparent. We seek the truth and take responsibility for our actions towards each other, our families, and the community. Our systems and processes must be robust and reliable. We strive for high standards and continually assess how well we serve others.

PASSION AND INTEGRITY

We are fully dedicated to our work, which provides us with a strong sense of purpose. Our passion keeps us motivated and energised. We strive to do what is right, to be honest, and to treat everyone with kindness, fairness, and respect.

  • GOALS

To provide accessible, high-quality medical and nursing care for all members of the community, particularly by welcoming more non-Tongan clients alongside our Tongan community.

To develop new and improved methods of delivering care, especially for individuals with long-term health conditions.

To recruit and support additional health professionals who can collaborate with us to enhance the Tongan Health Society’s approach to care.

  • GOALS

Create and enhance methods of supporting clients and their families by integrating medical and non-medical services, providing care that is well-organised, results-oriented, and promotes overall health and wellbeing.

Foster strong, healthy communities by empowering families to become more confident, informed, and engaged across generations.

Contribute to the improvement of the social and economic factors that influence individuals’ health and wellbeing.

  • GOALS

Achieve and uphold high standards through official accreditation from organisations such as the Ministry of Social Development, the Royal NZ College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the University of Auckland School of Medicine – Department of General Practice and Primary Care, and Tertiary Institutions.

Support and expand research projects that enhance our services and develop innovative care delivery methods, particularly for our predominantly Tongan clients and families, as well as broader Pacific and general health research.

Promote and cultivate training opportunities, including, where applicable, ECE teaching practicums, postgraduate researchers, medical and nursing students, social worker and counselling practicums, and RNZCGP registrars.

  • GOALS

Build strong relationships with NGOs, the Tongan Government, and other key organisations to support the Tongan Health Society’s business, service delivery, strategic development, constitutional imperatives, and governance and operational work programme.

Collaborate with Tonga’s Ministry of Health to implement a Tongan Outreach Project and Satellite Clinic in Tonga. This will assist families and individuals, particularly those who are vulnerable and not New Zealand residents, but may seek healthcare here as part of their immigration pathways.

  • GOALS

Provide high-quality ECE services to our community, seek future opportunities for growth, and continue to meet the Education Review Office's standards.

Support staff training and registration to enhance our workforce, improve services and models of care, meet THS accreditation requirements, and ensure that everyone operates to a high professional standard.

  • GOALS

Tongan Health wants to be known as a reliable and respected leader in Pacific health. It aims to enhance health and social services through innovation and strong leadership, with a particular emphasis on supporting the Tongan community, while also assisting everyone in Aotearoa who uses its services.

Support and develop business opportunities that aid vulnerable individuals and their families, particularly in areas such as social housing, parenting support, family violence services, education for self-care, social work and counselling, justice and prison-related programmes, and immigration assistance.

  • GOALS

Continue to build a strong, efficient, and sustainable organisation that provides our staff, clients, and community with valuable services.

Ensure we manage contracts and funding in a manner that aligns with our goals, values, and the aspirations of families and the broader community.

  • GOALS

Create and support new ideas and programmes for young people that help improve family, community, and intergenerational outcomes.

Employ positive approaches that acknowledge the diverse situations young people encounter, helping them feel connected to their culture and beliefs, securing employment or education, and making informed choices.

Develop programmes that empower youth to engage in their communities with confidence and effect positive change.

  • GOALS

Ensure that all team members are trained in the principles and practice of health equity and cultural competency.

Through ongoing internal quality programmes, recognise and address bias, work in ways that are culturally safe and respectful, and create inclusive and culturally secure experiences for our patients, whānau, staff, and the wider community.

Collaborate with the RNZCGP using its pro-equity guidelines, and align with their Māori Health Plan and Whakamaua: Māori Health Action Plan 2020–2025, which outlines the government’s goals for improving Māori health over the next five years. Ensure these principles are embedded across our organisation to help create a fair, sustainable health and disability system that delivers better outcomes for Māori.

Address racism and discrimination in all its forms through policy processes and registering bodies' competency programmes.

Ensure all organisational processes and policies are updated with relevant Equity and Treaty principles.

Continuously develop Foundation and Cornerstone programmes to ensure health equity is integrated into all clinical and non-clinical work programmes.
